i make strange faces

when i use the restroom, i make strange faces, as i think most guys do and i’ll even toss a body shudder in there once in a while. i don’t know if i could get myself to go in a bathroom like the one below. it’s a real, working toilet with heavily mirrored walls so the net effect is a one-way mirror.

here’s the view from the outside:

and the view from the inside:

i’ll spare you a picture of the face i would so love to make inside one of these deals.

45.2 mpg is pretty good

so i picked up a honda civic hybrid a couple weeks back. i wanted to get something with the carpool stickers so i could save some precious morning and afternoon time. with the wife finishing up school, i’m on kid duty and i could easily save 45-60 minutes each day by scooting along in the carpool lane. another side benefit is that I double the audi’s gas mileage without even trying.

on this tank of gas, i got 45.2 mpg and went over 500 miles on a single tank of gas, which is just over 10 gallons to fill up. in this age of $4 gas, this represents a huge savings. it’s a big change for me, too, because i’m starting to give in and realize that there are more important things to spend your money on besides cars. i never thought i would get to this point, but i guess everyone does eventually. i’ve had the opportunity to drive some nice cars, but i’d rather spend my hard-earned money on some more rewarding things, like my kids, wife, and house.

anyway, i’m also geeking it out and making some neat charts/graphs of my mileage with the hybrid. i’m sure you’re all anxious to see them.

sit down clown

so the warriors blew their chance in this second-round series, losing to the utah jazz at home tonight. the jazz play pretty solid fundamentally, as can be expected from a jerry sloan team, while the warriors were firing up threes like they were playing at milpitas high school on a friday afternoon. the game was pretty exciting until about 4 minutes left, when the warriors just couldn’t buy a bucket and the jazz widened their lead. the game was pretty much in hand and okur tries to add insult by dunking the ball with just a minute to go.

richardson took the opportunity to express his disgust at this turkish fool by laying him out. that was the right call for sure. i bet jerry sloan didn’t appreciate that move either. you already won the game, why try to dunk home those meaningless points.

paris hilton is going to jail

sure, it’s old news now and i’m not usually following these bratty kids around, but this quote i read yesterday was too good to pass up:

Yesterday a woman visiting her mum at the jail said inmates shower together and a large group of “very masculine lesbians” prey on them. She added: “This place is bad. Paris is not going to make it.” Denise Chavis, visiting her sister in the jail, warned Paris: “If you act like you’re all high-class and uppity, you’re done.”…And Hilton better hope the inmates don’t remember the videotape broadcast widely on YouTube that shows her mocking Jewish and African-American people. “She better learn to bite her tongue”…..In the big house, Paris will have to make two pairs of socks, one bra, two pairs of panties and two blue jumpsuits last for a week. “You have to take your underwear and wash them out in the shower,” said Chavis, whose sister has been in the jail for the past month on a stolen car charge.”

as if i could talk about anything else

well, the warriors are advancing to the second round after defeating the mavs tonight. i never thought this would happen in my lifetime. they were on fire, hitting all the shots and getting all the rebounds over what looked like a junior-college team. as the 3rd quarter slaughter came to an end, it was strange because the game got boring all of a sudden – mostly from them warriors having a 20-point lead. a little part of me wishes the game were closer, but then if that happened, the warriors might find a way to lose the game.

richardson had some good dunks. as the elder statesman on the warriors, he deserved it more than anyone:

and this picture is one of my favorites, because usually the roles are reversed with the white guy getting the crotch-facial from the black guy. does it really count because desagana diop is from senegal and andris biedrins is from latvia? damn straight it counts:

we’ll find out their next-round opponent this saturday. i think they can finish off the jazz or rockets, but the suns will be the true test.

warriors have to finish up at home

so, the warriors were up by 9 with 4 minutes to go but dirk diggler took over and saved the mavericks from elimination. baron davis fouled out and stephen jackson got his ghetto-ass ejected again. he might even be out for the next game, considering his reputation.

this is what it felt like watching the mavs end the game on that 15-0 run after the warriors were beating the mavs for most of the 4th quarter.

be patient…the good stuff happens around the 13 second mark

warriors win game 4!

in easily the most exciting game i’ve watched all year, the warriors beat the mavericks at home in game 4 of their opening series 103-99. it’s really nice to see all the rabid fans at the coliseum supporting the team. even j-rich made mention of that in his postgame interview on fsn after the game. they had some cold stretches in there but made their shots at the end when they counted. for the most part dirk diggler was pretty cold shooting, although he hit one near the end that brought them close.

and even mickael pietrus came up big with rebounds, blocks and this dunk:

not bad for a french guy.

they head back to dallas for game 5 on tuesday. good luck W’s.

harry reid speaks the truth

this line about dick cheney from harry reid (d-nv) hit the nail on the head as they argued about funding the war in iraq.

“I’m not going to get into a name calling match with somebody who has a 9 percent approval rating,” Reid said.

i can’t believe the republicans want to pour more money into this war that we will not win. i wasn’t around for vietnam, but there seems to be some parallels.

warriors win game 1!

the warriors pulled off a huge upset, sinking the mavericks in game 1 of their playoff series. of course, i had hope the warriors would win, but to get game 1 on the road was completely unexpected. i bet dallas will make some changes to their game plan because they’re too good to play like they did on sunday night. i figure nellie had some tricks up his sleeve from knowing the maverick players when he was coaching them a couple years ago.

watching the game in HD on steve’s tv was a treat also. i’m starting to save up so that we’re able to get an LCD tv by the summer. part of the problem is that we don’t have a good wall to put it on, so we might have to some minor room reconfiguration or construction to get a good mounting area for the aforementioned panel.

13 years of waiting

alyssa has never known the warriors to make the nba playoffs – they haven’t done it in 13 years! the other two years, she would have been too young to understand anyway. they beat dallas by 30 the other night because avery johnson was nice enough to trot out his bench players to help nellie get into the big dance. last night, they were up 30 on portland but then they started to lose it. i couldn’t help but get that sinking feeling that the warriors would somehow collapse again and give the last playoff spot to the clippers. i’m just glad that’s over with.

now that white boys dunleavy and murphy are gone, i feel much better about the warriors chances. no telling if stephen jackson will be back next year or if he will be playing in pickup games at elmwood.

bay area restaurant review

stumbled upon this excellent website with some random restaurant reviews by some bay area natives, jason and terry (not to be confused with jason terry of the future nba champion dallas mavericks). since i eat out almost every meal, it’s useful to have some reviews of places before trying something new. visit jatbar.com to read the reviews.

while they were in the field doing their testing, they also collected unsavory information about some of the restaurants they visited. they were nice enough to not call them out publicly, but some of the pictures are interesting.

i hope that’s a knuckle hair!

the new barry for the giants

barry bonds run might be over as the main barry for the giants as barry zito moves in. i surely want to watch a couple of his games this summer. i’m not saying he’s going to resurrect the giants and make them contenders, but at least we have someone exciting to watch this season. let’s hope that he stays as healthy as he was with the a’s. i don’t think he missed any games due to injury during his whole run there.

i won’t comment on the giants acquisition of dave roberts and rich aurilia or having ray durham bat cleanup behind barry bonds.

attack of the sharpened kite strings

saw this article come across the wire:

At least 11 people died and more than 100 people were injured at an annual spring festival in eastern Pakistan celebrated with the flying of thousands of colourful kites, officials said today.

The deaths and injuries were caused by stray bullets, sharpened kite-strings, electrocution and people falling off rooftops yesterday at the conclusion of the two-day Basant festival, said Ruqia Bano, spokeswoman for emergency service in the city of Lahore.

The festival is regularly marred by casualties caused by sharp kite strings or celebratory gunshots fired into the air.

Kite flyers often use strings made of wire or coated with ground glass to try to cross and cut a rival’s string or damage the other kite, often after betting on the outcome.

i like how they mention “sharpened kite strings”. why haven’t these killer strings made it to the us? that would make for an interesting csi tv show.

kate beckinsale’s feet

kate beckinsale was recently photographed at some movie premiere. i don’t have a foot fetish, but i think most men would agree that, in general, your toes should at least be on the frickin shoe a little more and not hanging over the edge:

napping at work

sometimes when the baby is up at night, or i’m working late on some home computer project, i can be a little drowsy at work. i’ve taken some car naps before, but they can be unpredictable because i have been known to ignore that ringing alarm clock for an hour or more. i thought this article was fitting:

The Art of Covert Napping

The Washington Post notes that there’s been no shortage of media reports over the last few years about sensitive employers giving workers permission to nap. Some even provide “relaxation rooms.”

But with companies demanding more from smaller staffs in recent months, employees aren’t so interested in that perk anymore, fearful that they’ll do most of their dozing in the unemployment line.

So on-the-job napping, while not going away, is being done on the q.t., according to the Post.

William Anthony, author of “The Art of Napping at Work” and operator of Napping.com, tells the newspaper that one of the most popular tactics is to escape to the parking garage to catnap in the car.

“Another odd place people say they nap is in the restroom, sitting on the toilet, resting their head against the side or back wall,” Anthony says. “It’s private; they can lock the door. The more industrious nappers construct pillows with extra toilet paper rolls for maximum comfort.”

Even cubicle dwellers can catch a few Zs if they’re resourceful, says Anthony.

“The cubicle is a most nap-unfriendly environment, but some manage by spreading papers out on their desks, clutching a pencil in their fingers and pretending they are absorbed in reading. Others assume the ‘thinking position,’ with their head in their hands and their back to the door.

“But the best one I’ve heard lately came from a guy who holds a bottle of eyedrops in one hand, tilts back in his chair and closes his eyes. That’s truly artful napping.”
